The Susan Constant, a replica of one of the ships that carried settlers to Jamestown at the beginning. This replica can be seen today at Jamestown.
In the years before the English settlers arrived in Virginia, Chief Powhatan had pulled all the Indians in the area between the York and James Rivers into a coalition of tribes amounting to some twelve thousand people. He did not have absolute control of all the groups in his domain. Some paid him regular tribute, but other, stronger groups kept him at arm's length. Nonetheless, he had a strong fighting force, and his authority in the area was considerable.
